An Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco made an emergency landing in Russia due to engine problems, leaving at least 276 passengers and 16 crew members stranded for at least 12 hours. Passengers, including several Bay Area residents, slept on the floor of a local school turned into a makeshift shelter. Local authorities provided mattresses and blankets, and a replacement aircraft was sent to pick up the passengers. The diversion came just one day after a United Airlines official warned of the dangers of a commercial jet having to land in Russia with American citizens aboard given the international tensions inflamed by the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine.
