California Sailor Rescued Off Hawaii After a Month Adrift

A California man, Kai Sato, disappeared after leaving Catalina Island on June 7; his sailboat’s mast snapped, he ran out of fuel and his phone died, leaving him drifting outside shipping lanes for about a month. He survived by improvising repairs with PVC pipes and kayak paddles, eating leftover oatmeal, catching fish and squid, and collecting condensation for drinking water. A passing container ship rescued him off Hawaii, where he’s staying with a relative and plans to sail to the Philippines on a larger vessel.
