Lowell Near Hawaii Sends Kauai Preparations into High Gear

Hurricane Lowell, briefly a Category 5 on Sept. 4, remains on a track toward Hawaii as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds and could bring heavy rain, high surf, and strong winds as it skirts near Kauai around Sept. 7; forecast models place the center 100–200 nautical miles west of Kauai with the right-front quadrant posing the greatest risk. Expect 3–6 inches of rain across most islands (Kauai and the Big Island potentially over 10 inches), Maui 2–4 inches, and lower amounts elsewhere.
