South Braces for Record-Breaking Heat Wave and Severe Weather

A dangerous heat wave with triple-digit temperatures is continuing to affect more than 33 million people in the South, with much of Texas and Louisiana experiencing temperatures at the 100-degree mark. The heavy humidity is causing heat indexes to soar another 10 to 20 degrees, making the heat wave much more dangerous than the typical scorching climate the South is known for during the summer. It could take more than a week for temperatures to cool down, and populations including the elderly, infants and young children, outdoor workers, and people with low socioeconomic status are at higher risk of heat-related illness.
