TL;DR

A heatwave moving east across the US and Canada brings near-record temperatures and poor air quality, with Chicago forecast to hit about 97F, New York around 100F, and Washington DC near 102F; a cold front is expected to ease the heat in coming days, though many areas will stay above seasonal norms and thunderstorms could sweep the east by weekend.
