Jail staff aware of filthy cell before inmate's death: records

Staffers at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia knew about the filthy conditions of Lashawn Thompson's cell and his deteriorating health before he was found dead in September 2022. Thompson's family alleges he was "eaten alive" by insects and bed bugs. At least two jail staffers sounded the alarm about Thompson's cell conditions and concerns about his health in the days before his death. Thompson was one of 15 detainees who died at the jail in 2022, up from two deaths in 2020 and three deaths in 2021.
