Qatari fund eyes stake in DC sports teams.

The Qatar Investment Authority is seeking to purchase a 5% stake in Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the ownership group that owns the NBA's Washington Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals, and the WNBA's Washington Mystics. If approved, this would make the Qatari fund the first foreign sovereign fund to own a piece of a major U.S. team sports franchise. The investment is estimated to be around $200 million and is expected to have ramifications on Ted Leonsis's bid to purchase the Washington Nationals' baseball club.
