Seeded stars tumble in Round 1 at the US Open

Nine men’s seeds and four women’s seeds failed to reach the US Open second round. Novak Djokovic was stunned by Mariano Navone, with other early exits including Arthur Fils (lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas), Cameron Norrie (lost to Luca Van Assche) and Matteo Arnaldi (lost to James Duckworth); Casper Ruud withdrew after the draw. On the women’s side, Belinda Bencic, Maja Chwalinska, Barbora Krejcikova and Sara Bejlek were upset in round one, underscoring a wide-open start to the tournament.
