Russia is retrofitting 60-year-old T-62 tanks with additional armor in an attempt to replace the tanks it loses in its conflict with Ukraine. However, the added weight of the armor is making the already sluggish tanks even slower, as the engines are not being upgraded. This poses a problem for the tanks' crews, as the slow reverse gears make them vulnerable in hit-and-run raids. The T-62 tanks without the extra armor already have slow reverse speeds, and the additional weight will further decrease their mobility.
