Joseph Emerson, a former safety officer at a flying club in California, allegedly attempted to crash an Alaska Airlines flight after admitting to taking magic mushrooms. He had served as the club's safety officer for about two years before leaving in 2019. Emerson was restrained and removed from the cockpit after attempting to cut fuel to the plane's engines. He was charged with 83 counts of attempted murder, one for each passenger and crew member. Emerson admitted to taking mushrooms before the flight and stated that he had been depressed for about six months. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
