Key points
- Avengers: Endgame Encore earned $11.2 million on Friday, securing the top spot in the box office.
- A24's Primetime debuted in second place, demonstrating strong opening weekend momentum.
- The re-release of Endgame follows Spider-Man: Brand New Day's recent ascent to No. 2 on the all-time domestic box office chart.
- Primetime is noted for its low budget, positioning it to achieve quick profitability despite lower initial revenue than the Marvel title.
Background
Avengers: Endgame was re-released as 'Endgame Encore' after Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed it to become the No. 2 all-time domestic box office hit in August 2026. Brand New Day reached $858.4 million domestically, edging out Endgame's $858.3 million, and is on track to approach $1 billion domestically. The re-release was projected to top the box office this weekend, narrowly edging out the Resident Evil reboot, with Primetime and The Heart of the Beast competing for third place.
Why it matters
The performance of Endgame Encore highlights the enduring appeal of Marvel franchises and the strategic value of re-releases in a competitive market. Meanwhile, Primetime's strong debut underscores the profitability potential of low-budget independent films, offering a counterpoint to the high-cost blockbusters dominating the top spots.
What to watch
Box office analysts will monitor whether Endgame Encore maintains its lead through the weekend and if Primetime's strong Friday performance translates into a profitable run. The competition between these titles will also influence the trajectory of other new releases, including The Heart of the Beast.
