"Louisiana's Battle Against Saltwater Intrusion Threatens Water Supply"

Baton Rouge's drinking water is not at risk from saltwater intrusion like New Orleans' due to the fact that much of the region's drinking water comes from groundwater aquifers, not the Mississippi River. The Baton Rouge Water Company and its affiliate companies obtain their water supply from separate groundwater sources that are not affected by the river. While the Mississippi River's salinity is expected to become unsafe for drinking in New Orleans, Baton Rouge's groundwater source, the Southern Hills aquifer, is protected by confined layers that prevent the rising salinity from reaching the drinking water supply.
