Another herd in Ottawa County, Michigan, has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), contributing to a total of 23 outbreaks across 10 counties. Despite the spread, federal agencies assure that the commercial milk supply remains safe due to pasteurization and health regulations. The current HPAI outbreak, which began in February 2022, is the worst in U.S. history, affecting over 96 million birds. While HPAI is almost always fatal in birds, it has a low mortality rate in cows.
