China's Mystery Pneumonia Outbreak: WHO Demands Transparency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested more information from China regarding an illness affecting children, described as "undiagnosed pneumonia." Hospitals in northern China are reportedly overwhelmed with sick children, leading to concerns about the spread of the illness. Chinese authorities attribute the surge in cases to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens. However, the WHO has asked for additional epidemiologic and clinical information. Experts suggest that overuse of antibiotics and drug resistance may be contributing to the spread of the illness caused by mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria. The WHO recommends following preventive measures such as vaccination, maintaining distance from sick individuals, staying home when ill, wearing masks, ensuring good ventilation, and practicing regular hand-washing.
