Condemned Dairy Cow Tests Positive for H5N1, USDA Confirms No Food Supply Risk

The USDA reported that meat from a culled dairy cow tested positive for H5N1 bird flu virus, but none of the meat entered the food supply. The virus, which has been closely monitored since 1996, has recently begun infecting a variety of mammals, including cows. The USDA is tracing the infected cow's herd and has found no other positive cases among 95 tested cows. Cooking meat to recommended temperatures can kill the virus.
