Drug-resistant fungus Candida auris expands across the U.S., including New Jersey

A drug-resistant fungus, Candida auris, is spreading across 23 states with more than 3,000 cases this year, mostly in hospitals and nursing homes. The infection can be hard to spot due to nonspecific symptoms, may survive on surfaces for weeks, and has a mortality rate of 30–60%. New Jersey has 166 cases, while Texas leads with 706; health officials warn Candida auris is an urgent antimicrobial-resistance threat identified by the CDC.
