Fatal Listeria Outbreak Claims Lives in Washington State

Three people have died and two others have survived severe listeria infections in Washington state. All the infected patients were over 60 years old and had compromised immune systems. The outbreak has not been traced to a common food source yet, but listeria can be found on food preparation surfaces, fresh cheese, leafy greens, cold cuts, and raw milk. Listeria can be fatal for pregnant individuals, those over 65, and those with weakened immune systems. Heating food to 165 degrees or higher can kill the bacteria.
