Flesh-Eating Bacteria Cases Rise in Louisiana and Coastal Areas

The number of Louisiana residents infected with flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio vulnificus has risen to 20 in 2025, the highest in a decade, with four deaths reported. The bacteria can cause serious illness through open wounds exposed to coastal waters or consumption of raw seafood, especially oysters. The Louisiana Department of Health advises caution, particularly for individuals with certain medical conditions, and recommends avoiding contact with salt or brackish water if wounds are present.
