Hot Yoga: A Promising Treatment for Depression

A trial conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital found that heated yoga sessions, specifically Bikram yoga, led to a reduction in symptoms of depression. Participants who engaged in at least two 90-minute sessions over an 8-week period experienced a significant decrease in depressive symptoms compared to those on a waitlist. Even participants who attended hot yoga sessions less frequently still saw a reduction in symptoms. The study suggests that yoga and heat-based interventions could provide a non-medication approach to treating depression, with additional physical benefits. Future research may compare heated yoga to non-heated yoga to determine the role of heat in the observed benefits.
