Investigation Launched into Mysterious Pneumonia Outbreak Among Chinese Children

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested detailed information from China regarding an increase in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children. Chinese authorities attribute the rise to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. WHO has requested epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results, to determine the cause of the reported clusters. In the meantime, WHO advises people in China to follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, including vaccination, maintaining distance from sick individuals, staying home when ill, getting tested and seeking medical care as needed, wearing masks, ensuring good ventilation, and practicing regular hand-washing.
