Rising Substance Abuse Rates Among Seniors

Substance abuse disorders among older adults, particularly baby boomers, have been on the rise as they reach the age of 65 and qualify for Medicare. Studies have shown a significant increase in opioid use disorder and fatal overdoses among seniors. Most substance use disorders involve prescribed medications rather than illegal drugs, with alcohol being a major contributor. The health consequences of substance abuse in older adults can be severe, including injuries, cognitive decline, and various diseases. However, very few seniors seek treatment due to barriers such as stigma concerns, logistical challenges, and limited Medicare coverage. Efforts are being made to expand access to treatment, but more needs to be done to address this growing problem.
