WHO Urgently Investigates Surge in Mysterious Respiratory Illnesses in China

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested information from China regarding an increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children. Chinese health officials have reported clusters of pneumonia and attributed the rise to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19. WHO has asked for additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results, and plans to be in contact with clinicians and scientists in China. Chinese officials are advised to follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, including vaccination, maintaining distance from the ill, staying home when ill, and practicing good hygiene.
