Finland Implements Strict Border Closure to Address Migrant Crisis with Russia

Finland will close its entire border with Russia for two weeks in an effort to stop the influx of asylum seekers, which the government believes is an orchestrated move by Moscow. The decision comes after 900 asylum seekers entered Finland from Russia in November, an increase from previous numbers. Finland accuses Russia of funneling people to the border in retaliation for increased defense cooperation with the United States, a charge denied by the Kremlin. The closure means only cargo trains can pass between the two countries. Asylum can still be sought by travelers arriving by boat and by air.
