This threat follows previous warnings from Russia about the potential use of nuclear weapons in defense of territories incorporated into Russia from Ukraine. The United States has previously warned Russia against using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that he would not hesitate to use Russian tactical nuclear weapons stationed on Belarusian soil. Russia currently has approximately 4,477 deployed and reserve nuclear warheads, including around 1,900 tactical nuclear weapons.
