US Vetoes UN Resolutions on Gaza, Igniting Controversy

The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a "humanitarian pause" in the Israel-Hamas war because it did not include recognition of Israel's right to self-defense. The resolution, put forward by Brazil, received support from 12 out of 15 council members, with Russia and the United Kingdom abstaining. The US, as a permanent member, was the only vote against, effectively vetoing the resolution. The US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, emphasized that Israel, like every nation, has the inherent right to defend itself. The council also held an emergency meeting to discuss the explosion at a Gaza hospital.
