Justice Department Investigates South Carolina Detention Centers for Deaths and Violence

The Justice Department has launched civil investigations into two detention centers in South Carolina, citing reports of inmate deaths, assaults, physical conditions, and alleged discrimination against those with disabilities. The investigations will focus on access to medical and mental health care, use of solitary confinement, and use of force by staff. The Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center has had eight reported deaths since 2022, including the deaths of Jamal Sutherland and D'Angelo Brown. The Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center has had six known deaths since February 2021, along with reports of escapes, riots, stabbings, and assaults. The DOJ aims to ensure the safe detainment of inmates and will work with local jurisdictions to address violations.
