Idalia Strengthens and Threatens Florida as Major Hurricane

Tropical Storm Idalia is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it approaches Florida's Gulf Coast, prompting officials to order evacuations and warn residents of potential storm surge. With 14 million Floridians under hurricane and tropical storm warnings, the storm's landfall is expected on Wednesday. Cubans have also been evacuating coastal towns as Idalia lashes western Cuba. The storm is forecasted to reach Category 3 strength before making landfall. Heavy rains, strong winds, and life-threatening storm surge are expected, prompting school closures and the suspension of commercial operations at Tampa International Airport. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 46 counties and mobilized National Guard troops.
