Researchers have discovered four new-to-science species of Antarctic feather stars, including the 20-legged Promachocrinus fragarius, bringing the total number of species in the genus Promachocrinus to eight. These alien-like organisms, related to starfish and sea cucumbers, were previously thought to represent a single species. The study used DNA analysis and morphology to identify the new species, with one species named after its strawberry-like shape. The findings highlight the importance of molecular analysis in identifying cryptic species and monitoring biodiversity.
