Mysterious Respiratory Illness Sweeps Across US, Puzzling Veterinarians

Veterinarians are investigating a mysterious respiratory illness spreading among dogs in several US states, including Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, and New Hampshire. The illness, described as an "atypical canine infectious respiratory disease," presents symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, eye or nose discharge, and lethargy. Despite testing negative for common respiratory diseases, the illness appears to have a viral origin. Researchers are collecting samples to identify the disease and determine its cause. While fatalities are rare, some dogs have developed acute and potentially fatal pneumonia as a secondary infection. Dog owners are advised to keep their pets up-to-date on vaccinations, reduce contact with unknown and sick dogs, keep sick dogs at home, and avoid communal water bowls shared by multiple dogs.
