TL;DR

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been released from detention after serving six months in prison for conflict of interest, abuse of power, and corruption during his time in power. His jail sentence was reduced to one year after a request for a royal pardon, and he was granted parole due to age and illness. Thaksin, a divisive figure in Thai politics, returned to a tumultuous political landscape and speculation surrounds his release, with some experts suggesting a possible deal with the establishment.
