Google Embraces Passwordless Future with Default Passkeys

Google is promoting the use of passkeys as an alternative to traditional passwords, allowing users to unlock accounts and devices using fingerprint, face scan, or pin number. Passkeys are considered easier to remember, quicker to use, and more secure. Google aims to make passwords obsolete and is encouraging the industry to adopt passkeys. While traditional passwords will still be supported, passkeys are now being used as alternatives for various apps, including YouTube, Search, Maps, Uber, eBay, and WhatsApp. The FIDO Alliance, along with tech giants like Microsoft and Apple, has been working to establish passkey standards. Apple has already introduced passkey support in iOS 16, and passkey functionality was first rolled out on Chrome and Android devices in October 2022.
