Arctic Gem Emerges: 158-Carat Yellow Diamond Found at Diavik Amid Closure

Rio Tinto’s Diavik diamond mine in Canada's Northwest Territories recovered a 158.20-carat gem-quality yellow diamond—dated to about two billion years old—during its final production phase before closure in 2026. While not the largest yellow stone from Diavik (a 552-carat example was found in 2018), it ranks among Canada’s biggest yellow diamonds and has not yet had a public valuation. Cutting could reduce weight by more than half as craftsmen work to maximize color and size. The mine operates off-grid with a focus on traceable Canadian origin amid its closure run.
