Eastern European Farmers Protest Ukrainian Grain Imports

Romanian farmers protested against Ukrainian grain imports, which are exempt from customs fees until June 2024, and have hurt prices and sales of local producers. The flood of cheap Ukrainian grain imports has caused anger among farmers in Central and Eastern Europe. The European Commission has estimated that farmers from Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Slovakia have lost 417 million euros overall from the inflows of cheaper Ukrainian grains. The commission has decided to hand out compensation worth 56.3 million euros to Polish, Bulgarian, and Romanian farmers, with more to come.
