Global Efforts to Reduce Methane Emissions Gain Momentum

The Biden administration announced a new rule at the COP28 climate summit that will require oil and gas producers to detect and fix leaks of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. While the move was welcomed by activists, some criticized the administration for not doing enough to address the burning of fossil fuels. Vice President Kamala Harris also pledged billions of dollars in additional funding to help developing nations fight and adapt to climate change. The new methane regulation is expected to prevent 58 million tons of emissions by 2038, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of American coal-fired power plants.
