Al-Shabab Launches Deadly Attack on African Union Peacekeeper Base in Somalia

Al-Shabab fighters attacked a military base housing Ugandan forces of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia. The group claims to have killed 137 soldiers, but the number of casualties is yet to be confirmed. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has been assisting Somalia’s federal government in its war against the al-Qaeda-linked armed group since 2022. Al-Shabab has been fighting to topple the government and establish its own rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic law since 2006.
