Mass Exodus: Majority of Ethnic Armenians Flee Nagorno-Karabakh

Over 75% of ethnic Armenians have fled the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh for neighboring Armenia, following the region's separatist government's announcement that it would dissolve itself. The exodus has prompted calls for the UN to be allowed access to the region, and Armenia has approached the International Court of Justice to protect the rights of ethnic Armenians. Azerbaijan has invited a UN mission to visit Nagorno-Karabakh to assess the humanitarian needs of those remaining and those who have been displaced. The European Union has also called for a UN mission to be allowed into the region, emphasizing the responsibility of Azerbaijan to secure the rights and security of Armenians. Meanwhile, the Azeri military has detained a former commander of Nagorno-Karabakh's separatist forces, and the Kremlin has stated that the future of any peacekeeping mission in Nagorno-Karabakh will be determined by Russia and Azerbaijan. The UN refugee agency is preparing for up to 120,000 refugees to arrive in Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh.
