Religious Violence Claims Lives and Churches in India

Over 50 people, many of whom were Christians, have been killed in ethnic violence in Manipur, India, with at least 50 churches destroyed or burned. The Christian community has accused the Hindu nationalist government of supporting the attackers, who are predominantly from the Meitei ethnic community. The Meiteis have longstanding tensions with Christians over land ownership and affirmative action policies. The violence has resulted in the displacement of over 23,000 people, with military personnel sent to the impacted regions and police receiving shoot-at-sight orders. The situation remains tense, with curfews and internet suspensions in place.
