Singapore Executes Man for Marijuana Trafficking

Singapore executed a man for drug trafficking despite claims of weak evidence. Tangaraju Suppiah was hanged for abetting the trafficking of 2.2 pounds of cannabis, even though he was not caught with the drugs. His family and activists had pleaded for clemency, but their attempts were unsuccessful. The United Nations Human Rights called on the Singapore government to adopt a “formal moratorium” on executions for drug-related offenses. The country executed 11 people last year for drug offenses.
