Australia has identified and named Russian citizen Aleksandr Gennadievich Ermakov as the mastermind behind a major cyber attack on Australian private health insurer Medibank, linking him to an international crime syndicate and imposing first-of-its-kind cyber sanctions. The attack, which compromised sensitive medical records of 9.7 million customers, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is one of the country's worst data breaches. Ermakov, also known as blade_runner and JimJones, faces a travel ban and strict financial sanctions, with Australia vowing to proactively "hack the hackers" in response to the cyber threat.
