China has been waging a cyber war against Taiwan, with the island being the biggest target for foreign disinformation in the world for nearly the last decade, according to a report by the Digital Society Project. The majority of these attacks originate from China, with cyberattacks targeting Taiwan spiking ahead of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island in August 2022. The disinformation campaign is intended to hurt Taiwanese morale and sow distrust of the U.S., one of the island's strongest allies, fostering doubt among Taiwanese that the U.S. would come to their aid in the event of a kinetic war.
