Greek NGO Launches Bold Plan to Eliminate Plastic Waste in the Mediterranean

Greek non-profit organization Enaleia is leading efforts to rid the Mediterranean Sea of plastic waste by incentivizing fishermen to collect plastic from the sea and partnering with recycling plants to turn the waste into synthetic fiber clothing and other products. Enaleia's model of synergy-driven cleanup has grown 17-fold in five years, and it manages to gather just 250 tonnes of plastic a year. The initiative has also partnered with Skyplast, a plastics recycling plant west of Athens, to create a tracing process from cleanup to repurposed retail products and markets its plastic chips as Recovered Seaside Plastic.
