Massive tanker spill hits Oman’s coast, risk of one of the worst environmental disasters

An enormous oil spill from the tanker Caroline Bezengi has reached Oman’s coastline, expanding to roughly 2,000 sq km and threatening up to 40 km of coastline near Ras Madrakah and Masirah Island after the vessel ran aground and suffered explosions earlier in June. With no party taking responsibility yet, experts warn this spill could become one of the worst in years, risking sensitive ecosystems and beaches around a marine reserve and mangroves.
