"Sharp Increase in Deadly Shark Attacks in 2023, Especially in One Country"

A new report from the International Shark Attack File revealed that deadly shark attacks doubled globally in 2023, with a disproportionate number occurring in Australia. The report noted a total of 69 confirmed non-fatal shark attacks worldwide, higher than the previous five-year average, and a jump in fatal incidents from five to 10. Australia accounted for 40% of unprovoked shark attacks that ended in death, with 15 unprovoked attacks and four deadly ones, while the U.S. recorded 36 non-fatal bites and two deadly attacks. The risk of being bitten by a shark remains extremely low, with surfers and beachgoers participating in board sports being the most common targets.
