Latvia’s Prime Minister resigns as drone incident fractures coalition

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina announced her resignation on May 14 after a drone incursion into Latvian airspace exposed deep tensions within the ruling coalition, leading Defense Minister Andris Spruds to resign and prompting a no-confidence push. While the opposition lacks enough votes for an immediate fall of the government, the crisis weakens Silina’s grip; however, with under six months until elections, Latvia is not expected to hold snap polls, and Silina could remain as acting prime minister until a new government forms, amid broad cross-party support for Ukraine, NATO, and EU integration.
