EU court rejects Hungary’s bid to halt Ukraine aid backed by frozen Russian assets

The EU General Court dismissed Hungary’s lawsuit challenging a Council decision to channel interest from frozen Russian central-bank assets to Ukraine via the European Peace Facility, saying the move is a CFSP/foreign-policy matter outside EU judicial review. From 2022–24 the EU mobilised €6.1 billion under the EPF for Ukraine, with a 2024 €5 billion increase through a dedicated Ukraine Assistance Fund, bringing total EPF support to €11.1 billion. Hungary’s Orbán-era blocking of Kyiv aid has shifted under the new government, which now treats Russia as a threat, including expelling ten Russian diplomats amid Moscow’s condemnation.
