EU Court Rejects Hungary's Bid to Block Russian Asset Aid for Ukraine
The EU General Court has dismissed a lawsuit by Hungary's previous government that sought to block billions of euros in aid to Ukraine funded by interest from frozen Russian assets. The court ruled the decision falls under the Common Foreign and Security Policy, which is largely shielded from judicial review. This ruling clears a legal obstacle for the European Peace Facility, which has mobilized €11.1 billion for Ukraine since 2022. Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on EU leaders to utilize the principal €200 billion in frozen Russian assets, with 122 MEPs urging a new legal framework to share liability risks with Belgium.
