Escalating War Crimes in Myanmar: UN Probe Reveals Disturbing Trends

A United Nations report by the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has found that war crimes committed by Myanmar's military, including the bombing of civilians and burning of civilian homes, have become increasingly frequent and brazen. The report covers the period between July 2022 and June 2023 and highlights the indiscriminate or disproportionate targeting of civilians, resulting in the destruction of entire villages. The report also mentions killings of civilians or combatants detained during operations. The IIMM is building case files to hold individual perpetrators responsible for these widespread and systematic attacks against civilians. The junta, which seized power two years ago, has previously denied atrocities and justified bombings as attacks against military targets.
