Ghana Enacts Strict Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation

Ghana's parliament passed a stringent anti-LGBTQ law, imposing harsh penalties for LGBTQ activities and advocacy, with gay sex already punishable by up to three years in prison. The bill, sponsored by a coalition of religious and traditional leaders, will be presented to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has seven days to assent or refuse to assent. Critics, including LGBTQ activists and the UNAIDS agency, argue that the law will fuel fear, hatred, and violence, hinder access to essential services, and undermine Ghana's development.
