UN-mandated investigation into Ethiopia's atrocities concludes despite ongoing reports

The UN-mandated investigation into human rights abuses in Ethiopia will conclude next week, despite ongoing atrocities in the region. None of the parties involved requested an extension of the mandate, which was created in 2021 after a motion submitted by the European Union. The International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia released a report warning of the continued risk of human rights atrocities in the country and the need for ongoing independent investigations. Proponents of another mandate were deterred by opposition from African states, and the European Union has backtracked on its support for scrutiny of the human rights situation in Ethiopia.
