"Urgent Plea to UN Rights Chief: Prevent Execution of Iranian Boxer"

Dozens of rights activists, lawyers, and former prosecutors have written a letter to the UN Human Rights chief, urging him to intervene and prevent the execution of an Iranian boxer, Mohammad Javad Vafa'i Thani, who was imprisoned for his role in anti-government protests in 2019. The letter, signed by 83 individuals including former UN human rights officials and prosecutors, calls for an urgent public appeal to halt Vafa'i Thani's imminent execution. Iran's judiciary has not commented on the matter, but Vafa'i Thani's lawyer stated that they had not been notified about the verdict. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is gathering additional information on the case.
